Salted Salmon

Salted salmon, or gravlax as it’s often called, is a delicate and flavourful addition to any meal. It’s perfect for topping bagels, adding to salads, or serving as a delightful appetizer. With just a handful of ingredients and minimal effort, you can make your own perfectly cured salmon at home. Here’s how to do it.

INGREDIENTS

200 g of fresh salmon (preferably with skin)
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of dried dill
1/2 teaspoon of sugar
1/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper

METHOD

1. Prepare the Salmon:

Begin by thoroughly washing the salmon under cold water and patting it dry with a paper towel. Ensure it’s free from excess moisture, as this helps the curing process.

2. Make the Seasoning Mix:

In a small bowl, combine the salt, dried dill, sugar, and ground black pepper. This mixture will serve as the cure, drawing out moisture from the salmon and infusing it with flavour.

3. Season the Salmon:

Rub the seasoning mixture all over the salmon, making sure it’s evenly coated. Focus on getting a good layer on both sides of the fish, but especially on the flesh side for maximum flavour.

4. Cure the Salmon:

Place the salmon skin-side down in an airtight container. Cover it securely, then place it in the refrigerator for 24 hours. This allows the salt, sugar, and spices to penetrate the salmon and cure it perfectly.

5. Serve:

After 24 hours, remove the salmon from the fridge and gently rub off the seasoning. It’s ready to enjoy! Slice thinly and serve as desired.

Tips for Serving:

Enjoy your salted salmon with cream cheese and bagels for a classic combination.

Add it to salads or pasta dishes for a burst of flavour.

This homemade salted salmon recipe is a great way to enjoy the natural richness of salmon with a burst of aromatic dill and peppery spice. Whether for a casual brunch or an elegant appetizer, it’s sure to impress!
