Poppy Seed Donuts

There’s something magical about homemade donuts—the warm, golden crust, the fluffy interior, and that satisfying first bite. These poppy seed-filled donuts are the perfect balance of sweet and nutty, making them a delightful treat for any time of day. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a curious beginner, this recipe is straightforward and incredibly rewarding. Plus, the poppy seed filling adds a unique twist that elevates these donuts from ordinary to extraordinary.

INGREDIENTS

For the dough:
300g wheat flour
170 ml lukewarm water
1.5 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp neutral oil (like vegetable or sunflower oil)
1 tsp salt
6g dry yeast

For the filling:
2 tbsp poppy seeds
1 tbsp sugar
50 ml water

For frying and garnishing:
600 ml neutral oil (for frying)
Powdered sugar (for garnish)

METHOD

1. Prepare the dough base:

In a large mixing bowl, combine 150g of wheat flour with dry yeast, stirring well. Add sugar and salt, and mix again to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

2. Incorporate the water:

Add lukewarm water, stirring until the mixture becomes smooth and free of lumps. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, allowing the dough to rise.

3. Make the poppy seed filling:

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by blending poppy seeds, sugar, and water until well combined. Set the mixture aside.

4. Finish the dough:

Once the dough has risen, add 2 tbsp of oil and gradually incorporate the remaining 150g of flour, kneading until a soft, elastic dough forms. Shape the dough into a ball.

5. Rest the dough again:

Lightly grease a bowl with a small amount of neutral oil. Place the dough ball in the bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rest in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

6. Shape the donuts:

After the dough has risen, take small portions (about 20g each), shape them into balls, and flatten them with the roll. Add about 1 teaspoon of poppy seed filling to the center of each flattened dough piece. Pinch the edges together and shape into a round ball, ensuring the filling is sealed inside.

7. Fry the donuts:

Heat 600 ml of oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Carefully place the donuts into the hot oil, frying them in batches. Cook until they are golden brown on all sides, turning occasionally to ensure even frying. Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

8. Garnish and serve:

Once cooled slightly, sprinkle the donuts with powdered sugar for a final touch of sweetness. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Donuts

Ensure the water is lukewarm (not too hot) when activating the yeast to help the dough rise properly.

Don’t overcrowd the pan when frying, as this can lower the oil temperature and result in greasy donuts.

For an extra indulgent twist, drizzle the donuts with a simple sugar glaze or melted chocolate.

These poppy seed-filled donuts are soft, fluffy, and bursting with flavor. Perfect for a weekend baking project, they’ll fill your kitchen with the comforting aroma of fresh dough and sweet filling. Whether you serve them as a breakfast treat, an afternoon snack, or a dessert, one thing’s for sure—these donuts won’t last long!

Happy baking!
